Industry background
Australian truffle growers have played a leading role in the development of the cultivated truffle industry. In Australia truffles are now grown in every State except the Northern Territory.
There are about 600 hectares planted to date, consisting of more than 150 growers across Australia.
The largest number of growers is in NSW totalling about 70.There are about 30 growers in the Capital Country region (from Jindabyne to Robertson) these local growers have about 16,000 trees in various stages of production. In the Central Ranges there are around 30 growers with a similar number of trees. The trees, infected with the truffle fungus, yield after 4 or 5 years and increase production by about 50% per year.
At full production this will represent about 1.5 tonne or a $3,000,000 industry.
This NSW region has the potential to become the biggest truffle growing area in Australia. Truffle production suits this area climatically, and it is an ideal small-holder industry.
